Dr Bassey, evangelical Christian church leader and representative of Harvest International bible colleges in Nigeria, side by side with Professor Wim van Binsbergen/Johannes Sibanda from Holland/Zambia, wearing some of his Southern Africa sangoma paraphernalia over the Africa Cultures uniform. Initially reluctant to join in the prayer at the Igbale Aiye shrine, Dr Bassey finally burst into glossolalia. By contrast, concerned that Christian expressions were absolutely dominant at the shrine and at the conference, Wim van Binsbergen sat down on the earth in the prayer stance of his adopted Nkoya people, Zambia, and addressed a traditional African prayer to the spirits of the place Igbale Aiye, and to the spirits of the Africans perished during the inconceivable terror of the trans-Atlantic passage to the New World. He then poured a lavish offering of alcoholic drink and sorghum meal, thus complementing the ceremony Fagbemissi Kaete Regelado-Garcia had held a short while before.
